The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin from the Royal Canadian Mint has been a mainstay in gold collections since 1979. While the coins minted between 1979 and 1982 are struck using 0.999 (99.9%) fine gold, Gold Maples struck after 1982 boast a purity of 0.9999 (99.99%) pure gold.
Each of these coins contains 1 troy ounce of gold. Their purity will vary according to the year of minting (coins issued from 1979 to 1982 have a purity of .999 fine gold while all subsequent releases boast a purity of 0.9999 fine gold.
On the obverse of Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins is an image of Queen Elizabeth II in right-profile relief. Created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt for the Royal Canadian Mint, it serves as the fourth-generation effigy for Canadian coins. The reverse side of 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leaf Coins features the sugar maple leaf, the official emblem of Canada. This design found was created in 1979 for this series by Walter Ott. Both fields of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf have radial lines in the background field, providing anti-counterfeiting security.
